Sadly, because our community produces far more animals than there are loving homes for, and because irresponsible animal companion guardians fail to spay, neuter, or appropriately care for their pets, our often under-funded, open-admission shelters are inundated with more animals than they are able to place in loving homes. We support our local shelters by taking in some of the animals that they have been unable to place, when the shelter space is needed for other incoming animals. We applaud the good work that animal shelters do for the human and animal members of the community and make every effort to work with these dedicated individuals in working to solve the companion animal overpopulation problem.
HHAR is not a shelter. All animals are kept in the homes of loving foster parents. We frequently hold adoption booths in Tallahassee. Please contact us for information on our upcoming booth. We can also arrange for you to meet our animals when a booth is not scheduled.
How To Adopt a Companion from Homeward Hound: The adoption process begins when the potential adopter completes an ?Adoption Questionnaire,? which can be submitted electronically (see link). With the goal of matching the animal to the right family, HHAR will review the questionnaire, checking landlord (if applicable) and veterinarian references. As the last stage of the process, we bring the animal to visit your home in order to see where and how the animal will be living, ensure that the animal will be a good fit with your existing pets and home, and answer any questions that you may have about the pet and his or her care. Assuming all goes well, the animal then stays at home with his or her new family. Adopters sign a contract that transfers the animal to the new family and stipulates care requirements. At the time of adoption, HHAR asks for a minimum adoption donation of $100.00 for dogs and $80.00 for cats to help cover the cost of veterinary care. (This is not to imply any sort of greater value to one species or the other, but rather is based upon average cost of care incurred by HHAR.) All dogs adopted from us are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm free & treated for intestinal parasites, and on heartworm and flea prevention programs. All cats adopted from HHAR test FELV/FIV negative, are current on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, treated for intestinal parasites, and on a flea prevention program.

1. Consider becoming a foster home: each individual or family who offers to temporarily open their home to an animal in need saves the life of a cat or dog. So often, healthy, friendly animals in shelters are destroyed simply because the shelter runs out of room to house all the animals. If no one offers to take the animal into their home, a wonderful animal loses a chance to grow old with a family who loves her. But it doesn?t have to be this way! As an ethical, responsible community of animal lovers, it is up to all of us to change this trend. When animals in shelters run out of time and space, foster families provide the extra time and space an animal needs for the adoptive family to locate their new companion.
Foster families host an animal in their homes until a permanent adoptive home is found. HHAR provides necessary veterinary care, and foster families feed and house the animal until the animal?s adoption. Incorporating a foster animal into your home can be very simple, and if your own animal companions? stress is a concern, remember that animals can often be kept in an area of the home separate from the foster family?s permanent companions. Save a life! Please consider becoming a temporary foster.

2. Help us network! Please spread the word about the animal companion overpopulation crisis, the tragedies of puppy mills, neutering, and adopting a companion rather than buying from a pet store or breeder.
Please tell your friends and family about our rescue organization, and encourage anyone interested in adopting a companion animal to visit us on Petfinder to adopt a friend.
3. You can also help reduce animal overpopulation by spaying or neutering your animal companions, and by encouraging others to do the same. There are only so many available homes. For every litter of 6 that is born, 6 shelter animals die. It's that simple, and the solution is simple, too: NEUTER!
4. Help support our work by volunteering your time, donating animal care supplies, or by sponsoring an animal in need. To care for the homeless and abused animals we rescue, on an ongoing basis HHAR needs flea preventative for dogs and cats, dog and cat food (canned and dry), cat litter, dog and cat treats, toys, bedding, used towels, sheets, and blankets. Dog and cat crates/carriers are also needed on an ongoing basis. If you wish to make a monetary donation, please click the Paypal Link below.
